MANYOOzashiki Sudare

Sudare is said to have come down from the Asian Continent in the Nara Period. Sudare, which was called “Misu” in the Heian Period, was one of indispensable furnishings that was used as temporary partitions in Shinden-zukuri (style of architecture for palatial or aristocratic mansions in the Heian Period) or for Shitsurai (seasonal hospitality) in honored days. The current style of Ozashiki Sudare (bamboo blind for reception rooms) that is descended from Misu, which was established in the Meiji Era, has been traditional interior decoration from ancient times. The standard of the basic width of Ozashiki Sudare is that of a sheet of Fusuma (sliding door) or Shoji (screen), so-to-speak a half of Tatami mat (Hanma), due to such an origin, and the Hanma-width of Kyoma (Gohachima), 880mm is mainly used at present. In addition, in order to prevent Surade from touching the floor surface due to aging extension, the height of Sudare is generally is made a little shorter than the threshold surface.
By the way, hanma size, quartered Ichimanakahann size, and a half of Hanma size, which are have been frequently used for Ozashiki Sudare since early times, are respectively called “Manaka”, “Kushi”, and “Komanaka.”
There are 2 measurement methods, such as that of quartered frontage for decoration of Shitsurai, and that having recent interior sense for accentual decoration with one sheet.

The standard manufacturing sizes of Ozashiki Sudare

* The size of 6 Gohachima Tatami mats is 2,640 x 3,520 (mm).

Gohachima Manaka W880 x H1,720 (mm)
Kushi W650 x H1,720 (mm)
